The book delves into the indigenous intellectual history of Hawaii, challenging the notion that such a history is absent. It focuses on lesser-known writers Joseph Ho'ona'auao K nepu'u and Joseph Moku' hai Poepoe, highlighting their contributions through Hawaiian-language newspapers. Their diverse writings, including articles, surveys, and poetry, preserve cultural knowledge and reflect Native Hawaiian epistemology. By celebrating indigenous intellectual agency amid US imperialism, the work advocates for the restoration of Hawaiian intellectual history to enrich contemporary Hawaiian thought and governance.
