In search of innovative forms of renewable energy production the combination of land use systems with bioenergy generation may contribute to covering rising energy needs. In addition, recent research suggests potential symbiotic effects of integrated agricultural bioenergy production that may lead to increased sustainability, efficiency and productivity in food systems. Consequently, the driving questions of research pursued in this work can be described as follows: - What are systematic implications of the integration of bioenergy systems into organic and low-input agricultural systems? - How does the agronomic and economic performance of an entire farm system respond to the integration of bioenergy production? - How does the integration of bioenergy systems with organic or low-input agricultural systems fit into the concept of sustainable/eco-functional/ecological intensification?
