Loughton Stairs joins the Navy to see the world. While he's away, his girlfriend Lisa ends up with his brother Demain instead, an easygoing gourmet more interested in family than adventure. A change in fortunes leads Demain into uniform as well and to eventual assignment aboard the same submarine as Loughton, who still has Lisa in mind. Their ups and downs are played out against the backdrop of the USS Portsmouth, a fast attack submarine they take from its sea trials in the Atlantic to a long voyage around the Pacific Rim.
