On board a US aircraft carrier en route for the Gulf, an electronic surveillance specialist, nicknamed the Aardvark, is preparing himself for war. Trained to seek and destroy submarines, he is confused to find himself pitted against an enemy who have no subs. The air of unreality pervades the ship as its crew, high on patriotism, violence and porn, watch the Gulf approach and begin to wonder whether this really is a war or merely a simulation of one?
