This Yearbook draws on a wide range of official and other sources to provide a factual and up-to-date overview of the United Kingdom and covers the main aspects of government policy. The book is in five parts: Britain and its people; government and foreign affairs; social and cultural affairs; the environment and transport; economic affairs. These align with the parts of the Annual Abstract of Statistics to enable the two books to be consulted as complementary volumes. This edition covers recent developments in science and technology, including the growth of the Internet and mobile communications. The responsibilities of the Scottish Parliament, the National Assembly for Wales and the Northern Ireland Assembly are also described following devolution.
