On March 23, 2003, U.S. Marines from Task Force Tarawa faced an unexpected and harrowing battle in Nasiriyah, Iraq. What began as a routine mission to secure two key bridges escalated into a nightmarish twenty-four-hour urban conflict, resulting in the deaths of eighteen Marines and over thirty-five wounded—marking the heaviest loss for U.S. forces during the war's initial phase.
