Hungary, the 1950s. János is in prison for political reasons, and his loyal wife, Luca, is unable to tell his dying mother the truth. She convinces the old woman that her son is working in America, directing films. She writes cheerful letters in János's name, giving some meaning to the mother's bedridden life. The old woman's room is an island of peace, where only the past lives on—János's childhood and the American letters. Meanwhile, Luca struggles for survival in the outside world. Isolated from her colleagues as the wife of a political prisoner, she eventually loses her job. When she turns to her former friends—who are still in high positions—they may fear her even more than she fears them. The threatening power keeps everyone in terror. They advise her to divorce for her own safety. However, Luca is unwilling to abandon or deny her husband. Then one day, János is released…
