Set in 1928 New Orleans, the story follows eighteen-year-old Sonny LaSalle, a promising student and boxer who idolizes his criminal uncles, Buck and Russell. Aspiring to join their life of crime, he convinces them to include him in their activities. However, a botched bank robbery leads to his imprisonment, where a tragic incident results in the death of a policeman, igniting the wrath of the notorious lawman known as "John Bones," setting off a chain of events that will change Sonny's life forever.
