The city is set against a landscape of gentle hills, where cypress trees, olive groves, and vineyards grow. It has a population of only seven thousand inhabitants, maintaining an unmistakable medieval atmosphere due to the stone of its buildings and its fourteen pale gray stone towers. In the 21st century, the place retains the charm of a medieval town, surrounded by its old walls and clustered around the streets of San Giovanni and San Matteo, which cross it longitudinally. In the center, at the junction of both streets, are the squares of the Cisterna and the Podestà, exuding an entirely medieval air. A bustling flow of tourists enlivens the urban spaces and the shops selling wine or crafts. The proximity to Florence and Siena enhances the appeal of this small eternal city.
