Through the beautiful images of this volume, it is very easy to fall prey to the charm of this modern country which has a long history and age-old traditions. Germany has assumed a significant political and economic role on the world stage and has asserted itself as one of the great industrial powers. However, this modern and industrial nation also contains monuments which bear witness to a rich historical and cultural past and which increase the charm of the landscape. The town of Dinkelsbuhl with its 14th century houses, towers and ramparts, or Rothenburg ob der Tauber with its splendid Gothic cathedral, are two examples of the many city-museums to be found in Germany. The rhine valley contains an extraordinary series of romantic, idyllic and historical landscapes and, although it is not far from the country's modern metropolises, it often gives the impression of being an area in which time has stood still.
