Více o knize
World War 1 dominates the history of the 20th century. The shock waves it set off were felt long after the Armistice in November 1918, and it's uneasy outcome prepared the way for a second and even more terrible conflict. The central theme for this account is the gigantic scale of the military effort wafed by perhaps 70 million men in uniform, of whom about 9 million were killed. The war was not one continuous struggle bit for separate phases, each with its own character and distinguishing features. First was the war of illusions of 1914, followed by the war of stalemate and stagnation of 1915. The war of the great slaughter followed in 1916-17, then social conflict and revolution developed in 1917-18, leading eventually to the Armistice. The book follows in turn politicians, generals, soldiers and civilians, through the four phases. The awful experience of four years of suffering is vividly portrayed in over 200 photographs from sources all round the world. The author's account is supported by a comprehensive range of reference material: chronologies, biographies, maps, statistical subjects, and ancillary text features. This is a vivid and fitting evocation of the Great War in all its aspects.
