Britain is a varied and beautiful country that can be explored again and again with the help of this book. Sight-Seeing in Britain uses maps, color photographs and descriptive text to make an attractive guide to this historic land. The book is divided into six main sections : The West Country, Southern England, Central England, Wales, Northern England and Scotland. These regions are color- coded on the key maps on pages 8 9. London is featured in a separate section describing many of the most interesting places to visit in the capital. Each of the six main regional sections of the book opens with a road atlas of the region. This atlas is at a scale of 1: 500 ,000, or about eight miles to one inch, and shows every Major road and many minor ones as well. Following the road atlas for each region are eight planned motor tours in various parts of That region, These have been selected and researched by AA experts, and each one can comfortably be completed in a day. A special map has been prepared for each tour, and this is accompanied by explicit route directions and descriptions of the places of interest along the way. (In the route directions, the abbreviation 'SP' is used for 'signposted' u) The tours are followed by an alphabetical gazetteer of the region, giving brief descriptions of the chief towns and villages. Each place described can be found on the road atlas by means of the reference number that accompanies the place name. This consists of the page number of this book where the place may be found on the atlas, followed by a National Grid reference number which both makes the place easy to locate on that page and also makes it possible to find the place on any other map. Most of the castles, stately homes, gardens and other places of interest described in the book are open to the public at certain times.
