This pictorial anthology celebrates the life of Ernest Shackleton, a key figure in the heroic age of Antarctic exploration. Best known for his legendary third expedition, 'Endurance', Shackleton also undertook three other notable expeditions, each captivating yet ultimately unsuccessful in reaching their intended goals. His charm, charismatic leadership, and unwavering determination made him a hero during his lifetime. Each chapter delves into different periods of Shackleton's life, introduced by Roland Huntford's insightful text and accompanied by a wealth of photographs, drawings, and diary extracts, many previously unpublished. Shackleton's independent spirit and courage inspired both financial backers and his men during the darkest times. Following years of lecturing and writing to settle debts, he raised funds for one final expedition, 'Quest'. Tragically, he died of a heart attack at forty-seven as 'Quest' reached South Georgia.
