A matter of trust is a reflection on the scope and importance of trust in organizations with a particular emphasis on work teams. It reviews sociological, economic, and psychological approaches, which seek to explain the nature, causes, and consequences of trust in organizations. To overcome the theoretical controversy and the shortcomings of research on this topic, a multi-component conceptualization of trust is presented, and a model is proposed in which trust plays a central role. The main questions addressed in this book are: What is the nature of trust? Which factors related to the composition of teams, work characteristics and organizational context affect trust within teams? What are the effects of high vs. low trust on the performance and effectiveness of teams?
