In the year 2016, a young graduate student named Peter Rockwell is working on his doctorate in astronomy at Cal Tech on the west coast. While sifting through some old data from the Spitzer space telescope he stumbles upon something he thinks is an indication of a problem with the telescope. He takes the information to his professor who recognizes that his young protege may have stumbled upon something that no one else has discovered. Calling upon some contacts at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory and NASA, his suspicion is confirmed. The object that Peter has discovered is going to have some serious effects upon the solar system as it passes by. At the same time Peter Rockwell is making his discovery, a husband and wife team of molecular biology researchers on the east coast makes an astounding breakthrough that could possibly mean the eradication of all the infectious diseases that affect humans. Both of these story-lines come together as the first woman president of the United States struggles to set in motion long range planning that could be the only means to save human civilization. As entire populations suffer upheaval and society is on the verge of breaking down, a reclusive billionaire uses his vast financial resources to try and shape human civilization as he believes it should be.
