The relationship between art and nature has become increasingly complex and fragile, yet also richer and more captivating. The artists and architects featured have elevated building into an art form that fosters new connections with the environment. Their creations, constructed from humble materials like branches, twigs, pebbles, straw, and stone sourced from their surroundings, fulfill various intentions—structural, sculptural, or sacred—evoking awe and reverence for nature's forces. From a bridge in Tibet linking an orphanage to a village, to a whimsical hut for mythical beings, and a pavilion in Iceland with a roof of perpetually frozen water, each project embodies purpose and innate beauty. This collection showcases sixty-six site-specific installations that utilize raw materials, manual labor, and natural elements to create truly green architecture. Projects by renowned figures such as Olafur Eliasson, Patrick Dougherty, and Nils-Udo are presented together for the first time. Selected for their dedication to raw materials and natural inspiration, these works are vividly illustrated through photographs, drawings, and models. The fantastical designs allow nature to reclaim the structures over time, prompting reflection on the rapid pace of modern construction and suggesting a path toward a more organic simplicity in architecture.
