The great exhibition in Venice brings together items from leading public and private collections the world over, but a large part of its fascination is due to the objects which belong to the state museums in Southern Italy (administered by the Ministero per i Beni Culturali ed Ambientali). In a rare example of far-sighted cooperation between public and private institutions, the Soprintendenze Archeologiche of Naples, Salerno, Potenza, Taranto and Reggio Calabria, coordinated by the central office of the Ministry, have joined forces to produce a wide-ranging series of initiatives which complete and enhance the showcase of Palazzo Grassi. The resulting exhibitions on related topics, held in the original sites of Magna Graecia, constitute an extraordinary survey of Greek civilization in the West, and represent an unprecedented event extending through the length and breadth of Italy.
