Re-Imagining Asia brings together a wide-ranging group of contemporary artists and thinkers who explore the cultural and artistic imagination of Asia.Beyond the often-mythologized ‘idea’ of Asia, the contributors investigate artistic heritage and political orientation, as well as the tensions between tradition and modernity. Through the visual image and the written word, they move towards a definition of Asian values – both aesthetic and intellectual.This timely collection includes works by artists based in Asia as well as artists from the diaspora, such as Chiho Aoshima, Subodh Gupta, Andreas Gursky, Kimsooja, Michael Joo, Gabriel Orozco and Song Dong with essays by Dipesh Chakrabarty, Ranjit Hoskote, Carol Yinghua Lu and Wu Hung among others.Shaheen Merali is Head of the Department of Exhibition, Film and New Media at the House of World Cultures in Berlin (HWC). He curated Dreams and Trauma and The Black Atlantic, both at the HWC, and co-curated The First Chapter for the sixth Gwangju Biennale, Korea (2006). His publications as editor include Spaces and Shadows: Contemporary Art from Southeast Asia and About Beauty (both 2005). In 2004 he published Black Pop and co-edited Far Near Distance: Contemporary Positions of Iranian Artists.

Die Filme über New York reichen von der Stummfilmzeit bis hin zu Untersuchungen der Realitäten nach dem 11. September und umfassen sowohl Mainstream- als auch Avantgarde-Praxis. Schlüsselwerke von Künstlern und Filmemachern – von Marcel Duchamp bis Fred Wilson, von Martin Scorsese bis Mira Nair – sind verwoben, um ein kohärentes Bild der zeitgenössischen Kunstszene in New York zu präsentieren.
