Historický román z počátku 19. století vypráví nevšední životní příběh portugalského Žida. Hrdina příběhu, syn vinaře John Zarco Stewart, je velmi inteligentní chlapec přátelící se se staršími dětmi. Jeho kamarádi mají brzy problémy s dospíváním, které John ještě přesně nechápe. Také jsou z jiné společenské vrstvy. Toto vše dohromady způsobí tragédii, při které se jeho nejlepší přítel utopí. Hlavní hrdina díky těmto zážitkům trpí depresemi a chce se zabít. Vyléčí jej až otcův přítel, uprchlý černý otrok, zvaný Půlnoc. Charismatický Půlnoc pak žije několik let v Zarco Stewartově rodině a svým vlivem se podepíše na všech jejích členech. Autor prostřednictvím rodiny Zarco Stewartů seznamuje čtenáře s postavením Židů v Portugalsku na počátku 19. století, prostřednictvím Půlnoce a jeho dcery s postavením otroků na americkém Jihu.

Široce koncipovaný román je částí volného románového cyklu amerického autora o dramatické historii sefardských Židů a odehrává se v 16. století v Portugalsku. Kniha je stylizována jako fiktivní rukopis, jehož autorem je židovský iluminátor rukopisů Berekjáš Zarco, který na počátku 16. století žije a pracuje v Lisabonu. V roce 1506 vypukla ve městě po období sucha epidemie moru, z níž představitelé církve viní Židy, násilně v zemi obrácené na křesťanskou víru. Jedním z takových novokřtěnců, kteří se své víry nevzdali a tajně ji praktikují, je i mladý Berekjáš, který je mimo jiné i milujícím synovcem velkého znalce kabaly. Při pogromu na Židy je hrdinův strýc zavražděn svým soukmenovcem a mladý muž se ze dne na den ocitne v nepřátelském světě bez opory, ovládaný jedinou myšlenkou, jak najít strýcova vraha a pomstít jeho smrt. Zpětně se pak pokouší zhodnotit nedávné události, pochopit jejich smysl a vyvodit důsledky do budoucnosti pro sebe i svůj národ. Historický román s kriminální zápletkou se odehrává v letech 1506-1530, vychází z důkladného studia historických pramenů a zabírá v rámci barvitého a čtivého příběhu jednu z tragických etap v historii židovského národa.
