„The Art of Encounter. Practices of Dialogue in Austrian International Relations“, contains 24 articles on historical, legal and cultural-political views of Austria as a traditional place and long-standing actor in the dialogue of cultures. It presents specific as well as general reflections on the dialogue-based approach, which has been developed in the last years and the grown consciousness for dialogue and its possible impacts. In doing so, many experiences of the Austrian foreign policy in general as well as of the Austrian foreign cultural policy have come into use. In a globalised world, intercultural competence is becoming increasingly important. Trust and balanced relationships can only be achieved when we are familiar with different cultural and psychological codes. Creativity and interpersonal ability therefore are part and parcel of the craft of diplomacy. This book offers an insight into methods and current practices of dialogue in Austrian diplomacy. It aims to contribute to Austria’s self-conception as a bridge builder, as a place of international encounter, and of dialogue.
