Im Jahr 2006 hatte sich Luxemburg mit PIRLS (Progress in International Reading Literacy Study) zum ersten Mal an einer internationalen Lesestudie im Primärbereich beteiligt. Die Studie bescheinigte den teilnehmenden Fünftklässlerinnen und Fünftklässlern eine im internationalen Vergleich sehr gute Lesekompetenz in Deutsch. Zwei Jahre später wurden einige der PIRLS-Lesetexte in sechsten Klassen sowohl in deutscher als auch in französischer Sprache eingesetzt. Diese Zusatzstudie zu PIRLS 2006 trägt den Namen LESELUX und ermöglicht zum einen den direkten Vergleich der Deutschkompetenzen mit den Französischkompetenzen am Ende der Primärschule in Luxemburg und zum anderen die Verortung der Luxemburger Schüler und Schülerinnen auf der internationalen PIRLS-Metrik. Die vertiefenden Analysen in diesem Band beschäftigen sich mit dem Aspekt der sozialen Heterogenität, der Migration und der Mehrsprachigkeit, mit dem Übergang von der Primär- in die Sekundarstufe, mit der lesedidaktischen Unterrichtsgestaltung und mit dem Schulklima.
