This volume outlines Weber’s comparative-historical sociology of ‘interpretive
understanding’. Drawing on central text to show how Weber himself applied his
own procedures, it demonstrates the analytic strengths of his research
strategies through discussions of his major works and concerns.
Focusing on civilizational analysis, this guidebook aids social scientists in exploring the origins, characteristics, and developments of civilizations. It utilizes the theories of Max Weber to provide a structured framework for understanding the complexities of societal evolution and the factors that shape different civilizations.
For over a century, Max Weber's influential work has shaped discussions on the origins of modern capitalism. This classic social science text explores the cultural mindset that emerged with modern capitalism, continuing to affect work attitudes in North America and Western Europe today. Stephen Kalberg presents a revised translation that features shorter sentences and clearer language, enhancing accessibility for students and general readers. This edition captures Weber's distinctive style and the nuance of his arguments, being the only translation of the revised 1920 edition published since 1930. To engage readers, the volume includes extensive introductions, a chronology of Weber's life, a glossary, and numerous clarifying endnotes. Detailed commentaries address the controversies Weber tackled, elucidate his complex causal arguments within the broader context of his sociology, summarize the history of the "Protestant Ethic debate," and explore the significance of his essays on "Protestant Sects." This work is ideal for courses across sociology, anthropology, political science, history, international relations, economics, and cultural studies, serving as a vital resource for understanding the foundations and persistence of modern Western society.
Protestantská etika a duch kapitalismu je patrně nejznámějším a zároveň k
nejdiskutovanějším Weberovým dílem. Weber ho publikoval v letech 1904-1905.
Zamýšlí se v něm nad počátky a příčinami vzniku kapitalismu, resp. nad
souvislostmi mezi rozvojem kapitalismu, náboženskými systémy, racionalismem a
byrokratizací státu. Vcelku jednoznačně zde spojuje vznik kapitalismu s
protestantským náboženstvím, s protestantskou kulturou a s protestantskou
etikou práce, vykazující prvky askeze, šetrnosti a střídmosti.
možnostech rozvoje principů kapitalismu v protestantském a katolickém
prostředí, resp. v prostředí křesťanských a nekřesťanských civilizací a
společností. Překladu Protestantské etiky předchází zasvěcený úvod od
sociologa a znalce Weberova díla Miloše Havelky.
