Historická práce podává na základě neobyčejně bohatého materiálu podrobné vylíčení začátků dělnického hnutí v USA až do r. 1881. Do středu svého zkoumání staví autor masy proletariátu a jejich aktivitu, při čemž ostře kritizuje celý systém vykořisťování v USA i jeho představitele. Podrobně je vylíčena účast dělníků v boji za nezávislost země proti britské koloniální nadvládě zejména, pak vznik a osudy prvních proletářských organizací odborových i politických, boj dělnictva za vlastní tisk, rostoucí protiklady mezi proletariátem a buržoazií, nesmiřitelný boj dělnictva proti vykořisťovatelským třídám i metody, jichž americká buržoazie užívala a užívá při rozbíjení dělnického hnutí. V předmluvě A. Poletajeva jsou zhodnoceny velké klady i různé nedostatky knihy.

Jackovi Londonovi bylo teprve čtyřicet let, když zemřel, a začal psát na začátku století. Přesto v těchto 16 letech napsal devatenáct dokončených románů, osmnáct knih sebraných povídek a článků, tři divadelní hry a osm knih autobiografických a sociologických. Psal příliš mnoho a nakonec příliš rychle. Když se mu zachtělo krásného jezdeckého koně nebo loďky, dosáhl své tužby povídkou.
