Jeden ze členů klubu se na Scuddera obrátí ve chvíli, kdy už je zcela zřejmé, že mezi členy klubu začínají padat rekordy v úmrtnosti...

Soubor povídkové tvorby amerického autora přináší především povídky s detektivní a hrůzostrašnou tematikou. Jedenasedmdesát povídek vybral ze svého celoživotního díla samotný autor, který tak znovu přivedl na scénu hrdiny několika svých rozsáhlejších cyklů - detektiva Matthewa Scuddera, právníka Martina Ehrengrafa a další, jejichž příběhy si získaly již dříve pozornost čtenářů. Kniha uspokojí nepříliš náročné ctitele detektivky, psychothrilleru či hororu.

O své svatební noci, když spolu stojí na verandě horského srubu, jsou novomanželé ošklivě zataženi do brutální vraždy. Uvidí, jak dva zabijáci zastřelili člověka, kterého předtím nikdy neviděli. Tato drsná příhoda, v které museli bojovat o svůj život, jim ale pozměnila i jejich vztah. Oba, když krutě zaplatí za svoje nevinné svědectví, si slíbí, že budou pokračovat ve společném životě jen tehdy, když případ dovedou ke konci a pomstí se. Tento příběh stále více oblíbeného Lawrence Blocka nepatří do žádné ze sérií zatím uvedených na český trh. Hlavním hrdinou není ani Matt Scudder, ani plukovník Cross, ale obyčejný mladý pár, kterému tento zážitek zcela změnil život.

Lawrence Block opět uvádí na scénu charizmatického nájemného vraha Kellera. Tentokrát ho práce zavedla do města Des Moines, kam si ho vyžádal starý známý Al. Ten si pravidelně předplácel Kellerovy služby. Jenže teď se všechno hatí - v Des Moines dojde k vraždě guvernéra státu Ohio, jinak horkého kandidáta na post amerického prezidenta. Ještě horší je ale to, že se ve zprávách objeví fotka podezřelého z vraždy a tvář patří Kellerovi. Keller se dává na útěk, míří domů, protože v New Yorku se cítí bezpečný.

Keller je na pohled docela obyčejný chlápek, jakých jsou v New Yorku tisíce. Svobodný, žije sám, sám večeřívá a sám si vynáší odpadky. Sám nosí své špinavé prádlo do prádelny na rohu, sám chodí spát. Sám také zvedá telefony, když zazvoní. A když volá stařec z White Plains – a volá poměrně často – sám si zabalí výbavu, sedne do nejbližšího letadla, odletí na určené místo a tam někoho zabije. KELLER JE TOTIŽ NÁJEMNÝ VRAH. Lawrence Block je naproti tomu špičkový autor kriminálního žánru a v této knize, sbírce deseti příběhů o nájemném vrahu Kellerovi, postupně, příběh za příběhem odhaluje víc a víc z pozadí této podivné profese. V závěru knihy se možná přistihnete u nepříjemně mrazícího pocitu: že tenhle vraždící profesionál je docela sympatický chlapík, skoro jako soused odnaproti, se kterým se občas zastavíte na kus řeči. Že by snad…

V dalším příběhu newyorského soukromého očka Matthewa Scuddera se opět můžeme ponořit do spleti ulic tohoto velkoměsta a nechat se vést nejen Scudderovým pátráním po brutálním vrahovi, ale vychutnat si i atmosféru koncertních sálu, jazzových klubů a také samosebou sezení Anonymních alkoholiků. Román současně zaujme pečlivě propracovanými postavami a mistrnou gradací: téměř od samého začátku totiž můžeme proniknout i do nitra samotného vraha. Scudder tentokrát řeší nadmíru obtížný případ, kterého se zpočátku ujal vlastně dobrovolně, aniž by měl klienta: s manželkou Elaine se zúčastnil slavnostního večera pro sponzory hudebního festivalu, mezi jehož hosty byly i jistí manželé, kteří po koncerte doma vyrušili lupiče, a ti je brutálně zavraždili. Přestože se s nimi Scudder osobně neznal, cítí se s nimi spřízněn díky tomu, že jim byl nablízku, když prožívali téměř poslední chvíle svého života. Jejich nepochopitelná a hrozná smrt mu nedává spát. Když se však po několika dnech objeví další mrtvoly, tentokrát oněch lupičů a vrahů, a neteř a posléze i dcera obětí mají podezření, že nešlo o obyčejnou loupež, jeho přesvědčení, že se za vraždami skrývá úplně jiný motiv, jen zesílí. Sledujeme tedy pátrání po šíleném vrahovi, sledujeme, jak se cesty vraha a detektiva postupně sbližují…

John Keller je řadový občan New Yorku. Ovšem ve skutečnosti je to nájemný vrah. Je chladný, přesný, ale není krutý. Tak ho čtenáři poznali v předchozí knize Zabiják. Lawrence Block se ke Kellerovi vrátil, ale někdo je mu v patách: tajemný Roger, který Kellerovi zabíjí oběti před nosem a pokouší se dostat i jeho.

John Keller je oblíbený zabiják, vynikající a spolehlivý profesionál, který se postará o každého, kdo mu přijde do cesty. Je nenápadný a efektivní, uznává pravidla profesionální cti, i když je takto nenazývá. Odděluje práci od osobního života a přistupuje k obětem jako k problémům, které je třeba vyřešit. Zatímco jiní si berou vraždy osobně, Keller se snaží o objektivitu, i když občas přemýšlí o morálních aspektech svých činů. I když by mohl být obyčejným pragmatickým vrahem, prochází pochybnostmi a osamělostí. V minulosti chodil k psychoterapeutovi, měl psa a dívku, ale nyní, i se svou prostořekou zaměstnavatelkou Dot, cítí, že mu to nestačí. Po letech v oboru zvažuje, zda by neměl skončit a odejít na samotu, ale peníze ho nutí pokračovat.
