Robinson se proti vůli svých rodičů vydává na moře na palubě trojstěžňového kupeckého korábu. Ten je přepaden piráty a Robinson se, s částí posádky, dostává do zajetí. Po dobrodružství na lodi kapitána pirátů je zachráněn španělskou kupeckou lodí. Po strašné bouři však tato loď ztroskotá. Robinson se ocitá na pevnině, pustém ostrově. Tady začíná zápas Robinsona o přežití: shání potravu, zařizuje si jeskyni, sestrojí sluneční hodiny a zřizuje si kalendář. Snaží se rozdělat oheň, vyrábí si oblek, začíná pěstovat zvířata. Do jeho života na ostrově zasahuje i příchod lidožroutů, nachází svého přítele Pátka. Text je doplněn ilustracemi Z. Buriana. V závěru knihy jsou připojeny vysvětlivky vybraných pojmů.
