Děj Hranice se odehrává na jihu Spojených států a v Mexiku před druhou světovou válkou. Hlavním tématem je překročení pomyslného prahu dospělosti dvou dospívajících bratrů v sepětí s přírodou, jejími odvěkými rytmy, na pozadí boje dobra a zla. Příběh má silný filosofický náboj, ale dá se číst i jako western – jako příběh synů, kteří se rozhodli pomstít své zavražděné rodiče.
