Ernst von Hesse-Wartegg (1851-1918) war ein österreichischer Diplomat. In den Jahren 1888 bis 1918 war Hesse-Wartegg Konsul von Venezuela für die Schweiz. Er bereiste große Teile Europas, Afrikas, Asiens, Nord- und Südamerikas und hielt seine Eindrücke und Erfahrungen für den interessierten Leser in einer Fülle von anschaulichen Berichten fest, die ihn als Reiseschriftsteller etablierten. Mark Twain und Karl May entnahmen seinen Büchern zahlreiche Details für ihre eigenen Werke. Im vorliegenden Band schildert Hesse-Wartegg seine Reiseimpressionen über die drei deutschen in der Südsee gelegenen Kolonialgebiete Neuguinea, das Bismarckarchipel und Samoa, die er 1900 bereiste. Ausführlich beschreibt er Land und Leute, deren Riten und Brauchtümer, den Handel und die Wirtschaft der Kolonien. Illustriert mit zahlreichen Abbildungen.
