Merle e Ted Kerasote si sono incontrati nel deserto dello Utah. Merle aveva circa dieci mesi, era stato abbandonato e aveva l'aria di cercare qualcuno che lo adottasse. Ted aveva quarant'anni, scriveva articoli e saggi sugli animali ed era alla ricerca di un compagno a quattro zampe. Merle si è subito trasferito nella casa di Ted nel Wyoming, una zona prevalentemente rurale, e Ted ha fatto installare una porta che permettesse a Merle di andare e tornare a suo piacere, completamente libero.
