Eliza se ale svého dítěte odmítá vzdát a v noci uprchne. Tak se román rozvětvuje na dvě dějové linie. Cestu Elizy a dalších otroků za svobodou a cestu Toma, který s dalšími podobně postiženými čeká, kdo se staně jeho novým pánem.
