Její Veličenstvo královna Viktorie stále vládne Nové Anglii a americkým državám, obrovské vzducholodi Královského námořnictva křižují nebesy a Země se dál otáčí na ohromném mosazném soukolí, které Bůh vsadil na nebesa, a spořádaně, půlnoc za půlnocí a rok za rokem, putuje kolem Slunce. Ve městě New Havenu žije jistý mladík jménem Hethor, který se pod dohledem svého mistra učí řemeslu a umění, za nějž vděčíme Bohu stejným dílem jako člověku: hodinářství. Jedné podivné noci získá jeho život nový směr. Po probuzení spatří živoucího mosazného anděla, jenž se obrovskými křídly dotýká nízkého trámoví podkrovního pokoje. Anděl mu oznámí, že byl vyvolen. Srdce světa dotikává a je třeba ho natáhnout. Hethor musí získat Klíč nebezpečenství, objevit způsob, jak stroj seřídit a zachránit tak Zemi. Na důkaz své návštěvy mu nebeská bytost zanechá stříbrné peříčko ze svého křídla. Krev ulpělá na jeho ostrém okraji je dostatečným důkazem, že Hethor nesnil. Aby splnil příkaz svého Boha, podnikne nevinný a nezkušený mladík dlouhou a nebezpečnou cestu k jižnímu pólu. Na konci strastiplné pouti nalezne sílu a pozná sám sebe.
