Eindrucksvoll schildert er die inneren Strukturen und Funktionsmechanismen der damaligen US-Armee aus der Sicht eines GI und seine Erlebnisse, Empfindungen und Ängste in deutscher Kriegsgefangenschaft. Als Heimkehrer hatte er zwar die Hölle des Krieges in Europa lebend überstanden. Die Erleichterung wurde jedoch durch die ständige Befürchtung überlagert, erneut in ein Kriegsgebiet geschickt zu werden. In den 60er-Jahren kehrte Jack Stewart an die alten Kriegsschauplätze zurück und stellte sich bis ins hohe Alter Fragen nach der Notwendigkeit und Vermeidbarkeit von Kriegen.
