      Atem, Lehm

Atem, Lehm —the German words for “breath” and “clay”, a title inspired by a poem by Paul Celan—is the first monograph dedicated to Latvian artist Daiga Grantina. Grantina’s solo show at GAMeC in Bergamo represented a major evolution in her poetics, a decisive and coherent change of palette and pace compared to her amorphous in-situ installations that have characterized her work to date. A mural forms an open-ended structure with its potentially infinite combinations: It seems to breathe, constraining and distending the grounding of space. The book’s structure mirrors this evolution, exploring a before, characterized by large-scale environmental installations in New York’s New Museum, the Biennale di Venezia and in Palais de Tokyo, Paris, to name a few, and an after, when the artist’s sculptural environments seem to shift their locus of perception.

Focusing on the evolution of Robert Ryan's artistic journey, this monograph explores his transition from musician and painter to a leading figure in tattoo art. It highlights his profound understanding of American tattoo traditions, infused with mystical interpretations of Eastern religious themes. The book features two decades of his remarkable paintings and tattoos, alongside interviews with notable figures in art and music, offering insights into his creative process and personal development as an artist.

'Biography' is the first major exhibition in Oslo by Elmgreen et Dragset. The show presents a wide selection of works from the artist duo's complex universe, including performance, sculpture and interactive installations. Works from the late 1990s onwards are shown together with recent projects, and all together create a unique insight into the artists' oeuvre. Elmgreen et Dragset consider an exhibition to be a work of art in itself, with all its narrative, choreographic and social possibilities and 'Biography' examines the very conditions of exhibiting. Works that initially arrived from very different contexts are here brought together and the new constellations of works generate altered readings and additional layers of meaning. When walking through the museum, one will experience environments which occur very realistic, just in order to end up in almost surreal and other worldly scenarios elsewhere in the exhibition. A durational live act is juxtaposed with a series of wall pieces, and existing sculptures find their place in the context of new site specific environments.
