Edward John Eyre hat bereits mehrere Expeditionen innerhalb Australiens hinter sich, als er 1840 mit einer Expeditionsgruppe die australische Westküste erkunden soll. Mehrmals gelangen die Männer zum Lake Torrens im Westen und Mount Hopeless im Osten, bevor sie sich endgültig Richtung Westen begeben. Dann teilt sich die Gruppe: Eyre bricht auf nach Port Lincoln auf der südlichen (später so benannten) Eyre-Halbinsel, während mehrere Männer sich vorab zur Streaky Bay im Westen der Halbinsel aufmachen. Als die Gruppen sich wieder treffen schickt Eyre aufgrund der harten Bedingungen während der bisherigen Reise alle Männer bis auf John Baxter, Wylie und zwei Aborigines wieder zurück. Zu Fünft begeben sie sich auf den über 1000 km langen Weg zum King George´s Sound. Nicht nur Wassermangel und Hitze machen ihnen auf der Reise durch die wüstenähnlichen Gebiete zu schaffen – bald wird es in der Gruppe zu einem Mord kommen ...
