The use of social media has become an everyday activity, one that established and young artists cannot, and indeed do not want to, do without. They work with it. They are where their audience is. At first it was websites, today it is social media, particularly Instagram, when it comes to visual art. Since the early web artists of the 1990s and the post-Internet art craze, a new generation of artists now explicitly responds to social media and its content and develops new innovative working methods and forms of artistic expression.

„The way I look at it, it’s like an extension of amateur dramatics.” Beim Female Masking verkleiden sich Männer mithilfe von weiblichen Masken und Ganzkörpersilikonanzügen in ihre Version von ›Frau‹ – und werden zu Objekten der Anschauung. Als subkulturelles Phänomen und kulturelle Praxis zugleich konfrontiert das Female Masking uns mit essentiellen Fragen darüber, was Weiblichkeit ist und wie sich diese manifestiert. Es rückt in den Blick, in welchem Verhältnis Maske und (alternative) Identität stehen. Was sich daraus ableiten lässt, ist ein vielschichtiges Netz an Vorstellungen über Transformation und Identität, Genderfragen und Schönheitsstandards, Blickhierarchien und den Objektstatus der Frau im 21. Jahrhundert. Bereits 1993 argumentiert Marjorie Garber über die homosexuelle Identität hinaus, dass die Technik des Cross Dressing, des Transvestierens, »einen Raum des Möglichen bildet, der die Kultur strukturiert und durcheinanderbringt«. Das Female Masking entwickelt diesen Gedanken weiter und verbindet Maskentheorie mit der Theorie der Genderperfomativität. All Dolled Up begibt sich auf eine erste Suche nach den Hintergründen des noch unergründeten Phänomens.
