Hrdinka, která život prožila v nefungující rodině, se po sňatku těší na život mezi příbuznými svého manžela, netuší ale, co to doopravdy bude znamenat. Manžel a jeho sourozenci jsou zvyklí na dominantní matku, zasahující bez zlého úmyslu, ale o to důsledněji do života svých dospělých dětí a do své péče zahrnuje automaticky i mladé manželství. Soužití s tchyní a hlavně vědomí, že manžel se většinou nedokáže postavit na její stranu, hrdinku dlouho trápí, otevřený konflikt ale nastane, když tchyně zaviní vážnou nehodu malého vnuka. As well as vividly exploring the tales, the author brings her expertise in the archaeology of the Iron Age and particularly shamanism to bear on the mythical worlds she describes, with evidence as diverse as the Gundestrup Cauldron and the famous bog bodies. She also asks how the myths survived the Christianization of Europe.
