      Hrdinka, která život prožila v nefungující rodině, se po sňatku těší na život mezi příbuznými svého manžela, netuší ale, co to doopravdy bude znamenat. Manžel a jeho sourozenci jsou zvyklí na dominantní matku, zasahující bez zlého úmyslu, ale o to důsledněji do života svých dospělých dětí a do své péče zahrnuje automaticky i mladé manželství. Soužití s tchyní a hlavně vědomí, že manžel se většinou nedokáže postavit na její stranu, hrdinku dlouho trápí, otevřený konflikt ale nastane, když tchyně zaviní vážnou nehodu malého vnuka. Následuje odcizení mezi manželi a mladá žena musí projít těžkým obdobím odloučení, aby si uvědomila, že při rodinném soužití je zapotřebí hodně tolerance a dobré vůle. Totéž si uvědomí i manželova matka a obě ženy se v závěru knihy shodují v úsilí vytvořit šťastnou rodinu, v níž bude každý mít dost prostoru k vlastnímu životu.
