Egyptě řádí smrtelně nebezpečná sekta, faraonův soudce Amerotke má zemřít… Arité, vyznavači hyení bohyně, se nechtějí smířit s egyptskou nadvládou v Núbii, a začnou rozsévat smrt. Vše se vyostří, když zaútočí na samotnou královnu Hatusu. Nejvyšší soudce Amerotke má tak před sebou nelehký úkol. Ve vlastním domě je záhadně usmrcen věrný královnin služebník Imhotep, vrahové řádí i v sídle královského žalobce, v thébských chrámech. Zločinci se neštítí zaútočit ani samotného Amerotkea a ukládat mu o život. Záhada stíhá záhadu. Kdo jsou neznámí mrtví s uťatýma rukama nalezení v zahradě Imhotepova domu? A kdo je tajemný Sgeru, který, jak se zdá, má všechno to brutální vraždění na svědomí?

Už popáté nás skvělý vypravěč zve na cestu do starověkého Egypta, ke dvoru královny Hatšepsut zvané Hatusu, jíž věrně slouží její statečný a moudrý soudce Amerotke. Hned na začátku se ocitneme v Údolí králů, mezi vykradači hrobek. Brzy nato je ve své vlastní posteli nalezen mrtev generál egyptské armády, kolem jehož těla se hemží smrtelně jedovaté rohaté zmije. Amerotke a jeho nerozlučný pomocník, beznosý trpaslík Šufoj, se pouštějí do pátrání. Případ se ale komplikuje a kromě generálovy smrti je náhle třeba vyšetřit ještě zmizení čtyř dívek z Isidina chrámu a příšernou vraždu kapitána chrámové stráže. Královna-faraon navíc trvá na tom, že předně musejí být dopadeni a usvědčeni lupiči bezostyšně plenící bohaté hrobky. Do toho se kromě živých začnou záhadně ztrácet i mrtví a všechno neúprosně spěje k ohromujícímu odhalení…

Píše se rok 1479 př. n. l. a ve slavné staroegyptské říši se děje něco nevídaného. Po drtivém válečném vítězství nad sousední Mitánií a razantní čistce, kterou poté provedla mezi dvorskými hodnostáři, usedla na trůn – žena! Ta ohromující opovážlivost přivádí mnohé k zuřivosti. Král Amenhotep III. se právem honosil přízviskem Skvělý. Za jeho vlády egyptská říše vzkvétala, na obou stranách Nilu rostly velebné chrámy i nádherné paláce a faraon sám žil způsobem hodným vtěleného boha: obklopen přepychem a harémem půvabných dívek pořádal bohatýrské hostiny. Se svou hlavní manželkou zplodil dva syny, z nichž mu však dělal radost pouze jeden. Prvorozeného Thutmose připravoval faraon k následnictví, zatímco neduživého Amenhotepa vykázal do ústraní. Osud však kráčí podivnými stezkami. Když jedné noci udeřila smrt, odstrkovaný kralevic se chopil příležitosti a vstoupil do dějin jako kacířský faraon Achnaton. Na všechny události čtenář nazírá prostřednictvím Achnatonova důvěrníka a ochránce jménem Mahu, jenž se stal nelítostným vykonavatelem vládcovy vůle. Právě Mahuovýma očima sledujeme osudy dříve přezíraného prince, poznáváme překrásnou Nefertiti i přední egyptské velmože. Nezůstanou nám utajeny nástrany panovnického dvora, kde se nevídaná krása snoubí s nevýslovnou krutostí. Chladnokrevný Mahu svého pána věrně následuje na strmé cestě k moci, neochvějně stojí po jeho boku, když se rozhodne svrhnout zástup prastarých bohů, zvrátit odvěký řád a nastolit vládu jediného božstva, Atona. Pak ovšem jeho dobrodinec znenadání zmizí, a tak Mahuovi nezbývá, než bez ohledu na nebezpečí rozplétat husté předivo palácových intrik, ať už na jejich konci číhá cokoliv.

Mahu vzešel z prostých poměrů, ale vlastní pílí a oddaností si dokázal získat přízeň panovnického rodu. Jako důvěrník krále Achnatona se stal očitým svědkem náboženské reformy, která do země přinesla pouze rozbroje, bídu a hlad. Když pak kacířský faraon jednoho dne beze stopy zmizel, zastánci starých pořádků jej hbitě označili za mrtvého a vládcem ustanovili šestiletého Tutanchamona. O bezpečí mladičkého vladaře, který je v rozkolísaných časech jedinou zárukou egyptské jednoty, se stará loajální Mahu. Sotva se však v zemi podaří nastolit křehkou mocenskou rovnováhu, dorazí do královského města Théb neuvěřitelná zpráva. Mahu byl vždy oddaným služebníkem svého vládce, ale nyní musel z vůle ctižádostivých hodnostářů opustit dvůr a odebrat se na předčasný odpočinek. Nejmilejší synovec kardinála Wolseyho, Benjamin Daunbey, a jeho povedený sluha a společník Roger Shallot jsou na jaře roku 1523 znovu povoláni do Londýna. V Cheapside byl krutě zavražděn florentský vyslanec Francesco Abrizzi. Někdo jej střelil do hlavy nedávno zdokonalenou pistolí a král Jindřich VIII. se rozhodl vypátrat pachatele tohoto zločinu. Cestou ke dvoru se mají stavit pro starého dvorního lékaře, sira Edwarda Throcklea. Nacházejí však opuštěný dům a lékařovo tělo v krvi. Vypadá to, jako by nešťastník spáchal sebevraždu. V Londýně zažije Shallot výbuch královského hněvu, urážky ze strany Abrizziových příbuzných a také vražedný útok. Shallot, jak vytrvale sám tvrdí, není žádný hrdina, a proto netouží po ničem jiném než uprchnout a skrýt se. Král a kardinál Wolsey jsou však jiného názoru - Benjamin a Shallot se musí vydat po stopách zločinu do Florencie. mají za úkol vypátrat vraha, předat tajný vzkaz florentskému vládci z rodu Medicejských a přemluvit jistého malíře k cestě do Anglie. Zní to možná jednoduše, ale skutečnost je krutě odlišná a překvapivý sled událostí ovlivní Anglii i celou Evropu navždy.

Léto roku 1523 bylo horké a do Londýna se vrátila potní nemoc. Král Jindřich VIII. se odebral se svým dvorem na Winsdor a království ponechal v rukou kancléře Thomase Wolseyho. Kardinál to neměl snadné. Z Toweru obdržel výhružné dopisy, adresované králi, s podpisem a pečetí prince Edwarda, o němž se obecně soudilo, že byl se svým bratrem jako potomek rodů Yorků v Toweru zavražděn. Pisatel požaduje větší množství zlata, jinak .... Jindřicha to samozřejmě znepokojilo, a lhostejným ho nenechala ani série krutých vražd mezi královskými katy. Pátráním po vyděrači a pachateli vražd je pověřen Benjamin Danubey a jeho spíš přítel než sluha Roger Shallot.

Kardinál Wolsey, ministr krále Jindřicha VIII., znovu pověřil synovce Benjamina Daunbeyho a jeho věrného, leč poněkud lehkomyslného druha Rogera Shallota choulostivým úkolem. Byl zavražděn první tajemník anglického vyslanectví v Paříži. Na území tradičního nepřítele a strůjce potíží, a to právě v době, kdy vše nasvědčuje tomu, že se ke dvoru vetřel neznámý špion a dodává francouzům nanejvýš brizantní informace, ohrožující impérium v samotných základech. Aby vyřešili ožehavý problém, potřebují oba přátelé nejen spoustu taktu a umění kombinovat, ale i nevšední Shallotův talent najít i ve zdánlivě bezvýchodných situacích spásná zadní vrátka.

Píše se rok 1523. Roger Shallot, lékař, šibal a tajný posel krále, se evidentně nudí. Má zakázáno vykonávat lékařské povolání a přibližovat se ke krásné Mirandě, a tak se zabývá četbou knih. A právě četba v něm vzbudí zájem o obchod s relikviemi. Shallot si uvědomuje obrovský potenciál, který může takový obchod mít, a ihned se do něj pouští. K jeho smůle se však brzy dostane do velkých problémů a také do vězení. Král i kardinál proti němu vznesou obvinění a usvědčí ho z porušení zákona. Pod hrozbou smrti je mu nařízeno, aby získal zpět říšské jablko Karla Velikého, jednu ze vzácných insignií, která je v současné době bedlivě střežena v převorství Clerkenwell. Šance na úspěch je však mizivá…

Ze svatyně chrámu boha Anubida záhadně zmizel posvátný ametyst a nocí se potuluje záhadný vrah nosící masku šakalího boha, který si vybírá oběť za druhou, včetně vyslanců pokořené říše Mitanni. Jde o dílo obyčejného člověka nebo jsou ve hře nadpřirozené síly? Úkolem zjistit pravdu je pověřen nejvyšší egyptský soudce Amerotke.

Kardinál Wolsey opět povolal svého nejmilejšího synovce Benjamina Daunbeyho a jeho věrného souputníka, nevyléčitelného dobrodruha Rogera Shallota. Psal se rok 1522 a Stafford, vévoda z Buckinghamu, byl zatčen pro velezradu. Roger a Benjamin proti své vůli přihlížejí krvavé exekuci, aby se vzápětí dověděli, co bylo pravou příčinou Buckinghamova pádu: pátral po dvou nad jiné vzácných relikviích – po svatém grálu a Excaliburu, legendárním meči krále Artuše. V doprovodu a pod dohledem agentů tajné služby Jindřicha VIII., o jejíchž instrukcích nemůže být pochyb, se oba přátelé vydávají hledat bájné relikvie... Není toho málo, čemu musí dva mladí pánové čelit, nejen aby splnili úkol, ale aby přitom sami nepřišli o život.

Záhadný zločinec rozsévá smrt po celých Thébách… Další napínavý případ oblíbeného soudce Amerotkea… Posvátný obřad na nádvoří Ptahova chrámu je v plném proudu, když vtom tři písaři padnou k zemi. Píše se rok 313 našeho letopočtu a my se ocitáme v Římě, kde se císař Konstantin snaží zavést novou víru: křesťanství. A přestože má za zády podporu své panovačné matky, Heleny, která by nejraději ovládala nejen jeho, ale i celou říši, není to pro něj nic snadného. Když temné síly řádí nejsilněji, rozhodne se Kublajchán povolat na pomoc svého přítele, jímž není nikdo jiný než slavný cestovatel Marco Polo. Ten se spolu s františkánským mnichem bratrem Rafaelem a buddhistickou mniškou Su-ling pouští do pátrání.
