Scholars and Humanists contains a series of letters exchanged between the Iranian scholar and statesman, S.H. Taqizadeh, and the German Iranist W.B. Henning, between 1937 and 1966. The letters contain a wealth of information important to the history of Iranian studies in the twentieth century, specifically in relation to Manichaean studies, and Old and Middle Persian philology. Also important is insight provided regarding the prominent figures involved in the study of ancient Iran. Furthermore, The letters demonstrate the contribution of Taqizadeh, who was also a senator and an ambassador, as a scholar who studied the development of calendars and Iranistics, and his attempt at promoting Iranian studies both in Iran and abroad. For a long time, Sasanian studies were mainly cultivated by linguists and historians of religion, and the only standard work on the history of the Sasanian Empire was Arthur Christensen's L'Iran sous les Sassanides (Copenhagen 1936; second revised and expanded edition 1944). Only in recent years, Christensen's authority was challenged: Several new syntheses eventually allowed Late antique scholars to better understand the history and the structure of the great rival of the Roman Empire. However, we still lacked a handy, student-friendly introduction to Sasanians studies. Now, Daryaee and Rezakhani provide us with this very welcome booklet, which I highly recommend to students, to an educated audience, but also to Classical scholars (it's never too late). The title of the King of the Seven Climes, used by Khusro I in the sixth century CE, suggests the most ambitious imperial vision that one would find in the literary tradition of the ancient Iranian world. Taking this as a point of departure, the present book aims to be a survey of the dynasties and rulers who thought of going beyond their own surroundings to forge larger polities within the Iranian realm.
