Peter Hinchliffe byl navigátorem u velitelství bombardovacího letectva RAF v letech 1944–1945. Jeho zájem o německé noční stíhací síly pramení z listopadu 1944, kdy byl sestřelen nočním stíhačem nad Belgií během operačního letu. Po poválečném působení jako učitel se Hinchliffe vrátil do RAF jako stíhací kontrolor a v roce 1966 odešel do zálohy. Následně nastoupil k ministerstvu zahraničí a Commonwealthu, kde ho jeho znalost němčiny často zavedla do Německa.
