Spolu s nimi se dostaneme na známá místa z předchozích dílů i do koutů zcela nečekaných. Ani v tomto díle rozhodně není nouze o napětí, dramatické situace a osobitý humor. Královský rod čelí hrozbě dvou temných čarodějů, kteří se osvobodili z pradávného prokletí a přísahají pomstu královně a celému jejímu rodu. Jenně, kterou brzy čeká korunovace, hrozí smrt, a celou zemi může znovu zachvátit temná doména. Zlé čaroděje lze porazit jediným způsobem: zničením prstenu, do kterého byli zakleti. Ale k tomu je zapotřebí znovu zažehnout oheň alchymistů, dávno ztracený po katastrofálním požáru. Septimus, princezna Jenna, vrchní písař Broučín i čarodějka Marcia hledají pomoc na všech stranách, aby odvrátili pohromu a zkázu celé země. Snadné to mít rozhodně nebudou, ale věřme, že i tentokrát zvítězí dobro nad zlem.

V paláci probíhají horečné přípravy na oslavu čtrnáctých narozenin Septimuse Heapa a princezny Jenny — pro každého z nich je tento den významným životním předělem. Oslava se však nekoná, palác a celý hrad zachvátí temná hrozba a blíží se zkáza. Septimus a Jenna se snaží o záchranu, ale vše se zdá marné.
