Nelson Richard DeMille (*23.8.1943) se narodil v New Yorku. V dětství se rodina přestěhovala na Long Island. Tři roky studoval na Hofstra University, poté vstoupil do armády a byl přijat do důstojnické školy. Stal se poručíkem americké armády (1966–1969) a zúčastnil se bojů ve Vietnamu jako velitel pěchotní čety 1. divize kavalerie. Byl vyznamenán Leteckou medailí, Bronzovou hvězdou a Vietnamským křížem za statečnost. Po návratu do Spojených států znovu nastoupil na Hofstra University a dosáhl univerzitního titulu v oboru politických věd a historie. Jeho rané knihy jsou detektivky z prostředí New Yorku. Jeho prvním velkým románem byl titul By the Rivers of Babylon (1978). Je členem amerického Cechu autorů, organizace Mystery Writers of America a americké Menzy. Je držitelem tří čestných doktorátů: doktor humanitních věd z Hofstra University, doktor literatury z Long Island University a doktor humanitních věd z Dowling College.
