Nejinak je tomu i v příběhu nazvaném Maltézský sokol (1930), v němž soukromý detektiv Sam Spade přijímá od krásné dívky zdánlivě banální zakázku. Druhý den ráno už jde o případ dvojnásobné vraždy a Sam je jedním z podezřelých. Aby očistil své jméno, musí rozplést klubko lží a najít vzácnou sošku...
