Tentokrát se jedná o vraždu úspěšné rozvodové advokátky, kterou kdosi zastřelil. Vlastně spíš popravil, jak to tak vypadá. Když si ale Milo spolu s Alexem Delawarem začnou myslet, že už mají vraha na dosah, je nalezena další oběť. A teprve tehdy si oba vyšetřovatelé uvědomí, že mezi těmi třemi vraždami existuje jisté bizarní spojení. Zdá se, že nehledají tři různé pachatele, ale jediného sériového vraha. Velmi inteligentního vraha s vytříbeným smyslem pro manipulaci. A takový se dá dopadnout, jedině když odhalíte jeho šílený motiv...

"Nezabiju vás, doktore Delaware. I když bych měla." Ta slova pronesla Constance Sykesová, sofistikovaná a úspěšná lékařka, v jejímž dosavadním chování ani brilantní policejní psycholog Alex Delaware nepostřehl sebemenší známku násilnických sklonů. Mistr eutanazie Eldon Mate si nechával říkat Doktor Smrt, protože pomohl spáchat sebevraždu řadě nevyléčitelně nemocných lidí. Jistě nečekal, že i on zemře ve své pojízdné ordinaci. Vrah s krutou ironií zavěsil doktorovu mrtvolu na speciální smrtící přístroj zvaný humanitron a svůj čin završil obzvláště brutálním podpisem. Vyšetřování je svěřeno detektivu Milovi Sturgisovi, který se tradičně obrací na svého dlouholetého přítele, soudního psychologa Alexe Delawarea. Tentokrát však mezi nimi dojde ke střetu zájmu, neboť Alex je v případu osobně zainteresován a nedokáže si vytvořit nezávislý úsudek. Na parkovišti před nočním klubem v Los Angeles zůstala ležet čtyři zkrvavená těla. Neznámý vrah střílel bez zjevného důvodu, oběti byly zřejmě ve špatný čas na špatném místě. Případu se ujímá vyšetřovatelka z oddělení vražd Petra Connorová, ale hned zpočátku je jí jasné, že má před sebou nesnadný úkol: jednu z obětí se nedaří identifikovat, chybí jakýkoli motiv či stopy z místa činu... zkrátka další příspěvek do archivu nevyřešených případů... Pátrání po nevypočitatelném zabijákovi Connorové znesnadňuje skepse celého oddělení i nepřátelský přístup některých kolegů. Román závratným tempem popisuje úsilí, které musí mladý bezdomovec vyvinout, aby přežil tváří v tvář nevšednímu zlu. Bohatá členitost, emocionální ponor a galerie vedlejších postav z masa a kostí, včetně již zmíněného Alexe Delawara v nápadně odlišné roli, než v jaké obvykle vystupuje, dělají z příběhu ukázku vrcholné fáze literární tvorby muže, který se zařadil mezi veliké vypravěče století.

Poprvé se Alex Delaware setkal s Laurou ve své psychologické ordinaci. O několik let později se jejich cesty zkříží znovu, tentokrát na pánském večírku, kde dívka vystupuje v odvážném erotickém programu. Alex je otřesen a také Lauren cítí hanbu. Pravá hrůza však přijde ve chvíli, kdy se Alex krátce po této příhodě dozví, že Lauren byla brutálně zavražděna a její zohavené tělo pohozeno kdesi v postranní uličce. Alex nedbá rady svého přítele, detektiva Mila Sturgise, aby nechal případ policii, a riskuje vztah se svou přítelkyní, aby se mohl vydat po stopách Laurenina vraha. Při sledování bouřlivé minulosti své nešťastné pacientky se Alex dostává do neskutečného světa zvrhlých psychologických experimentů, obchodu se sexem - a nakonec i do smrtelného nebezpečí.

„Řádí nám tady pěkný magor, a tak jsem si řekl, že ti zavolám," oznámil do telefonu detektiv z oddělení vražd Milo Sturgis svému příteli, soudnímu psychologovi Alexu Delawareovi. Volal z prestižní galerie, kde byla v předvečer své první výstavy uškrcena mladá umělkyně. Pachatel si pro svůj čin vybral vskutku velkolepou scénu, takže zjevně nejednal bez rozmyslu, ale jinak se policii nedaří najít žádný motiv. Alex ovšem ví, že zločin bez motivu neexistuje, a když je krátce poté před nočním klubem ubodán nadějný kytarista, začne jako jediný hledat mezi oběma vraždami spojitost. Postupně se mu podaří přesvědčit i detektivy, že pachatelem je stejný člověk, pro něhož je chladnokrevná vražda svébytným uměleckým směrem, který bude jistě chtít vybrousit k dokonalosti... na dalších obětech. Postupující pátrání dává Alexovi za pravdu. Vyšinutý zabiják pokračuje v započatém „díle", policejní vyšetřování nabírá obrátky a přivádí Alexe s Milem na nejrůznější místa od polorozpadlých periferních činžáků až po luxusní rezidence. Jedno by však Alex nečekal ani v nejhorším snu: že v souvislosti s tímto případem stane na prahu své bývalé přítelkyně Robin Castagnaové, která je zřejmě další položkou na seznamu obětí šíleného vraha...

Ta vila byla sice rozestavěná, ale i přesto se v prominentní čtvrti tyčila jako symbol okázalého luxusu. V takovém sídle je snadné vést sladký život – ale místo toho tam došlo ke dvojnásobné vraždě. Zastřelený muž a uškrcená žena, které vrah naaranžoval do bizarního posmrtného objetí. Ten pohled otřásl i detektivem Milem Sturgisem, který je na drsnou podívanou za léta policejní praxe zvyklý. Nepotřebuje se dlouho rozmýšlet, aby pochopil, že k dopadení tohoto vraha bude potřebovat pomoc Alexe Delawarea. Totožnost zavražděné ženy zůstává neznámá, zatímco muž je identifikován jako architekt Desmond Backer, proslulý zastánce ekologických staveb a ještě proslulejší svůdce žen. A protože takovýto člověk nemá o nepřátele nouzi, Milo s Alexem se brzy probírají poměrně dlouhým seznamem podezřelých a labyrintem jejich vzájemných vztahů, okořeněných žhářstvím, vydíráním a touhou po pomstě. Pachatel sleduje každý jejich krok a jeho nevole roste. Je docela dobře možné, že až ho Milo s Alexem zaženou do kouta, stanou se cílem jeho běsu právě oni dva…

Byla krásná, nahá, vyděšená a skočila mu před auto. Náhodně projíždějící řidič si vyslechl příběh o únosu, jehož obětí se stala nadějná studentka herectví a její spolužák. Ten příběh byl děsivý, ale smyšlený. S největší pravděpodobností šlo jen o jakési herecké cvičení s cílem získat patnáct minut slávy. Cena za nerozvážný čin je vysoká – oba mladí lidé stanou před soudem, kde si vyslechnou různě přísný trest. Michaela při sezeních se soudním psychologem Alexem Delawarem tvrdí, že celá akce byla Dylanovým výmyslem, ale přesto ze všeho vyjde mnohem hůře než její spolužák. Delaware z jejích slov pozná, že dívka nelže, a nemůže se zbavit nepříjemného pocitu, že se za celou záležitostí skrývá mnohem temnější pravda, než se na první pohled jeví. Jeho tušení se potvrdí, když je Michaela brutálně zavražděna. Delaware se svým policejním kolegou Milem Sturgisem narážejí na celou řadu znepokojivých otázek, na něž se jim dlouho nedaří nalézt odpovědi. Byla to taková poklidná ulička na svazích Los Angeles..., dokud náhodný kolemjdoucí nezahlédl v zaparkovaném voze zmasakrované mrtvoly mladých milenců. Vyšetřování se dostává do rukou detektiva Mila Sturgise, kterému je po obhlídce místa činu jasné, že bestiální útok musí mít na svědomí naprostý psychopat a že k jeho odhalení bude zapotřebí víc než jen standardní policejní procedury. „Zase jednou jsme zabrousili do tvých vod,“ oznámí do telefonu svému příteli, policejnímu psychologovi Alexu Delawareovi, když ho přivolává ke spolupráci. Totožnost mrtvé ženy zůstává neznámá, ale jejího partnera se Milovi brzy podaří identifikovat: je jím Gavin Quick, muž s pochybnou minulostí, který se snažil zbavit černých můr v ordinaci psychoterapeuta. Delaware se okamžitě vypraví za Quickovou psycholožkou v naději, že získá cenné informace, ale tvrdě narazí – ta dáma má ve své kartotéce řadu významných osobností a urputně hájí jejich soukromí, ať už jsou živí nebo mrtví. Alexovi tak nezbývá než se pracně brodit špínou posledních Quickových dní, aby došel k závěru, že to, co se zprvu mohlo jevit jako naprosté šílenství, je ve skutečnosti chladnokrevně provedený čin…

Troy a Rand byli dospívající chlapci, když unesli a zavraždili dvouletou dívenku. Troy pobyt za mřížemi nepřežil, ale mírně retardovaný Rand se dočkal svobody. Hned po propuštění zavolá soudnímu psychologovi Alexu Delawareovi a žádá ho o setkání, aby mu mohl sdělit důležitou informaci. Na schůzku už nedorazí – život mladistvého vraha ukončí brutální vražda. Alexu Delawareovi zavolá v noci bývalý pacient, nyní asi sedmnáctiletý Jamey Cadmus. Chlapec mluví nesouvisle, je v hluboké depresi a pravděpodobně i pod vlivem drog. Znepokojený lékař se okamžitě vydává za ním na psychiatrickou kliniku. Přijíždí ale pozdě, protože zjistí jen to, že Jamey právě uprchl. Vzápětí je proti Jameymu vzneseno obvinění ze šesti brutálních vražd, které otřásly celým Los Angeles. Chlapcovi zámožní rodiče najmou špičkového advokáta, jenž hodlá postavit obhajobu na faktu, že je Jamey schizofrenik a neodpovídá za své činy. Delaware však s takovouto diagnózou nesouhlasí a snaží se najít pravdu. Postupně se dostává do propletence událostí, na jejichž konci dospěje k šokujícímu zjištění o pozadí celého případu.

V honosné čtvrti Los Angeles dojde k sérii drastických vražd. Na zahradě soukromého domu je nalezena mrtvola dítěte, kterou tam kdosi pohřbil před šedesáti lety. A krátce poté dělníci při výkopových pracích v nedalekém parku objeví kostru dalšího nemluvněte a opodál se najde zastřelená mladá žena. Na první pohled tři nesouvisející případy. Anebo je mezi nimi přece jen nějaká spojitost? Na to se snaží přijít detektiv Milo Sturgis za pomoci svého přítele, brilantního psychologa Alexe Delawarea. Možná je ale historie tohoto případu tak neuchopitelná a tak děsivá, že na odhalení úplné pravdy tentokrát nebudou Alexovy zkušenosti stačit. Vyšetřovatelé se musí vrátit o šest desetiletí zpátky a pokusit se složit příběh o krásné zdravotní sestře, charismatickém lékaři a novorozenci, kterému nebylo souzeno přežít. Nitky dávných událostí vedou až do světa soudobých celebrit, jimž privilegovanost jejich postavení umožňuje skrýt pod vnějším pozlátkem naprosto cokoli. Třeba i zločin. Když vrah nechává na místě činu otazník, má policie nejdřív hledat otázku, nebo odpověď? Tentokrát je obětí laskavý, naprosto nekonfliktní muž, pravý opak arogantní Vity. Jediným pojítkem mezi oběma brutálními činy je list papíru s velkým černým otazníkem, který vrah zanechal na obou místech činu. A pak i na třetím… a na čtvrtém… Zatímco město svírá strach, Milo s Alexem postupně pronikají do temných zákrutů pachatelovy mysli, protože jedině tam mohou nalézt klíč k motivu. Vše nasvědčuje tomu, že vraha k činu ponouká krajně zvrhlá záliba, jejíž projevy dokáží otřást i nejotrlejšími policisty. Policejní psycholog Alex Delaware už nepřijímá moc soukromých pacientů, ale v případě Lucy Lowellové udělal výjimku. Doporučil ji totiž detektiv Milo Sturgis, který spolu s ní svědčil v případu sériového vraha. Pro Lucy byl zdlouhavý soudní proces natolik psychicky náročný, že se jí začal znovu zdát děsivý sen, v němž vidí sebe samu jako malou holčičku, která je v nočním lese svědkem hrůzného činu. Sama Lucy nedokáže určit, jestli je to opravdu jenom sen, nebo obraz skutečné události. Ví jen to, že opakující se noční můra začíná ovlivňovat celý její život. Před Alexem stojí nesnadný úkol – rozpoznat, jestli Lucy celá léta netrýzní potlačená vzpomínka z raného dětství. Pokud by tomu tak bylo, zřejmě někde v policejních archivech zůstal nevyřešený případ vraždy...

Elise Freemanová volala zoufale o pomoc, ale bohužel příliš pozdě. A jako by už tento samotný fakt nebyl dostatečně děsivý, brzy vyjde najevo, že všichni aktéři tragického příběhu vyučovali na nejprestižnější střední škole v Los Angeles. Milo Sturgis má před sebou opravdu nesnadný úkol – a jestli někdy potřeboval odbornou pomoc Alexe Delawarea, pak ten okamžik nastal právě tady a teď. Od samého počátku vyšetřování je zřejmé, že tento případ bude lopotným hledáním pravdy a případné soudní líčení se ponese ve znamení špinavých právnických kliček. Milo má ve svých rukách společenskou i politickou časovanou bombu, ale pokud chce dostát své profesní cti, nezbývá mu než se začít brodit břečkou ukrývaných nenávistí, hříšných tajemství a smrtelných hříchů, které se nevyhýbají ani nejvyšší společnosti. Drobná, přemýšlivá, zasmušilá dívenka. Alespoň tak si Alex vybavoval Tanyu Bigelowovou z dob, kdy byla jeho pacientkou. Nyní, jako devatenáctiletá dívka, musí znovu řešit problém, který k jejímu věku nepřísluší - a s nímž by si pravděpodobně neporadila většina lidí. Tanyina adoptivní matka Patty vyjevila na smrtelné posteli děsivé tajemství: spáchala vraždu. Tanya tomu nechce uvěřit, a tak se v zoufalství obrátí na Delawara. Ani Alex nedokáže přijmout myšlenku, že by oddaná matka a laskavá zdravotní sestra byla schopna tak hrůzného činu. Spolu s Milem Sturgisem se při pátrání ocitají v předměstských brlozích i luxusních rezidencích, kde pomalu skládají mozaiku nepokojného života obou žen. Odpověď na otázku, zda Patty skutečně spáchala vraždu, však naleznou teprve ve chvíli, kdy jim až příliš skutečný vrah ukáže, kde je pohřbena celá řada hrůzných tajemství - a také mrtvých těl. Možná se i tentokrát ukáže, že pomsta je nesmrtelná...

Dlouhá léta býval hotel Fabourg místem jejich romantických schůzek, ale nyní tam Alex a Robin přišli naposledy. Hotel se zavírá, a tak se v jeho luxusních prostorách dnes večer sešli stálí hosté, aby při koktejlech zavzpomínali na vše hezké, co tady společně zažili.
