    • Cestovatel a dobrodruh Michael Palin sel tentokrát vydal na sever Afriky. Během devětadevadesáti dní překonal zdánlivě nekonečnou saharskou poušť, a přitom navštívil několik zajímavých míst. Z Maroka vyrazil přes pohoří Atlas, dále do západního Alžírska a na jih do Mauritánie. Z Dakaru pokračoval do Mali, kde navštívil město Timbuktu, dále až k řece Niger, a poté odletěl do Alžírska. Na konci své cesty se zastavil také v Libyi a Tunisu.

Following the success of Inside Sahara, photographer Basil Pao documents another of Michael Palin's unforgettable journeys, this time to the top of the world: the amazing, breathtaking Himalayas. The 300 resulting photographs provide a dramatic visual record of an extraordinary trip, and will be tied to a Travel Channel special program.Armchair explorers, connoisseurs of fine photography, and fans of Michael Palin will gladly come along on this memorable expedition to some of the world's most inhospitable, yet exquisite, terrain. The adventure-the longest and most challenging that Palin has taken during his long career-extends from the deserts of Afghanistan to the sheer slopes of Mount Everest, passing through Pakistan, India, Nepal, Tibet, China, and Bangladesh. Along the way Basil Pao expertly captures the magical appeal of the region and its diverse landscapes, peoples, and cultures. Look into the infamous Tora Bora Mountains in Afghanistan; the storied Khyber Pass; the ancient cities of Peshawar, Taxila, and Lahore; the Bay of Bengal; and the mighty peaks of K2. In addition, intimate shots of Michael and his film crew at work and relaxing off-air give fascinating insight into the making of the TV series about the voyage.

    • It is a mistake to deny one's homeland, warns the Dalai Lama to Basil Pao. After leaving China at the age of 18, shaped by the unrest in Tiananmen, Pao feels the influence of these words. He deepens his knowledge of language, literature, and history, traveling for over a year through all provinces of China—from Inner Mongolia to Hong Kong, from Shanghai to the Tibetan Plateau. Through impressive imagery, he documents the diversity of China: magnificent landscapes, ambitious construction projects, weathered farmers, cultural treasures, vibrant fishing scenes along the Yangtze, state monuments, and bustling street kitchens. Pao intertwines these visual impressions with his remarkable storytelling talent, humorously recounting challenges with his two drivers, Kami and Kazi, and chaotic experiences during a sandstorm at the Jade Gate. This work is a unique masterpiece that not only portrays the provinces of China but also serves as a personal and contemporary document about the Middle Kingdom, a tribute to a country in transformation, poised for a significant public emergence that will leave us in awe.

In this his most challenging journey, Michael Palin tackles the Himalaya, the greatest mountain range on earth, a virtually unbroken wall of rock stretching 1800 miles from the borders of Afghanistan to south-west China. Penetrated but never conquered, it remains the world's most majestic natural barrier, a magnificent wilderness that shapes the history and politics of Asia to this day. Having risen to the challenge of seas, poles, dhows and deserts, the highest mountains in the world were a natural target for Michael Palin. In a journey rarely, if ever, attempted before, in 6 months of hard travelling Palin takes on the full length of the Himalaya including the Khyber Pass, the hidden valleys of the Hindu Kush, ancient cities like Peshawar and Lahore, the mighty peaks of K2, Annapurna and Everest, the bleak and barren plateau of Tibet, the gorges of the Yangtze, the tribal lands of the Indo-Burmese border and the vast Brahmaputra delta in Bangladesh

No. 1 bestseller and superstar doing what he does best, introducing millions of avid readers to little-known peoples and places. Until the early 1990s, when the Berlin Wall came tumbling down, travelling behind the iron curtain was never easy. In undertaking his new journey through Eastern Europe, breathing in its rich history, and exquisite sights and talking to its diverse peoples, Michael fills what has been a void in his own experience and that of very many others. NEW EUROPE is very much a voyage of discovery, from the snows of the Julian Alps to the beauty of the Baltic sea, he finds himself in countries he'd barely heard of, many unfamiliar and mysterious, all with tragic histories and much brighter futures. During his 20-country adventure Palin meets Romanian lumberjacks, drives the 8.58 stopping train from Poznan to Wolsztyn, treads the catwalk at a Budapest fashion show, learns about mine-clearing in Bosnia and watches Turkish gents wrestling in olive oil. As with all his bestselling books, in his uniquely entertaining style, Palin opens up a new and undiscovered world to millions of readers.

When Michael Palin was researching for his novel HEMINGWAY'S CHAIR his interest was stimulated by Hemingway's appetite for travel and 'Papa's' evocations of the places he knew. Hemingway remains a compelling figure, and Palin's goal was to revisit Hemingway's world. This book includes the American West ('wide lawns and narrow minds'), Idaho, Michigan ('fly fishing, hunting'), Europe in the First World (where Hemingway was wounded serving in the Ambulance Brigade), Cuba (where Hemingway wrote FOR WHOM THE BELL TOLLS), Paris in the Roaring Twenties and Spain during the Spanish Civil War, Sun Valley and Key West - where the Hemingway lookalike competition is an annual event.
