Inspector Rudd has a most baffling case: a bizarre triangle at the bottom of which lies murder. The triangle involves a shy young man passing through a quiet village on a summer holiday, another solitary soul, Maggie Hearn, a local maiden lady who sees him as the son she never had, and Jess, a lovely girl who has a date with death.

Inspector Rudd meets endearing Kitty Laud, years after her retirement from a career in the music halls. Kitty asks Rudd to trace her brother Hal, missing from his digs in London. The inspector has to put the case aside when he is assigned to investigate events at a stately home in the country. Gathered at the once handsome but now deteriorating Aston property, the kin of aged Edgar Aston stand by his deathbed. Also present is Roland Saxby, long estranged from his friend Edgar, and eager to end their quarrel before it's too late. But it's Roland's sudden, suspicious death that brings Rudd to ask questions and ultimately find the astounding reason for Hal's disappearance.

L'inspecteur Finch est perplexe. Curieux, que ce petit truand soit venu lui livrer des renseignements ! Malgré ses mensonges flagrants, son récit comporte des éléments qu'il ne faut pas négliger... Pourquoi cette soudaine coopération ? A-t-il agi pour son propre compte ? Et pourquoi Finch est-il filé, depuis quelque temps ? En tout cas, certaines personnes semblent bien désireuses de voir l'inspecteur se replonger dans le dossier Thorpe. Sans doute pour profiter des résultats de son enquête... Mais en quoi le meurtre de la petite Mellie Thorpe peut-il bien intéresser la pègre ?
