Jack Mapanje presents the moving account of a poet's imprisonment by the state, his struggle to probe the hidden motives for this arrest and his attempt to provide an unforgettable record of the architecture of imprisonment and the perpetual struggle between the forces of truth and those of naked power. In 1987, Mapanje was arrested by the Malawian secret police and imprisoned without charge until 1991. His memoir represents a retrospective attempt to explain the cause and terms of his imprisonment.

Because he was a radical poet, Jack Mapanje was imprisoned without trial or charge by the dictator Hastings Banda of Malawi for nearly four years. The themes of his poetry range from the search for a sense of dignity and integrity under a repressive regime, incarceration, release from prison, exile and return to Africa.

Forty years after his country's independence from the British, Jack Mapanje has returned to his concern for ordinary people in Africa and in the world at large. Shortlisted for the Forward Prize for Best Collection.

Mapanje was imprisoned by Malawi's dictator Hastings Banda for nearly four years, chronicling his prison experiences in his previous books. Now he returns to Africa.

Zahlreiche internationale Appelle renommierter Schriftstellerinnen und Schriftsteller, darunter Harold Pinter, Wole Soyinka und Susan Sontag, weltweite Aktionen des PEN-Clubs, Interventionen auf höchster Ebene sowie Tausende Postkarten und Unterschriftenlisten von Menschen, die sich weltweit gegen seine Inhaftierung aussprachen, konnten schließlich im Mai 1991 zu Mapanjes Freilassung beitragen. Seither lebt Jack Mapanje in Großbritannien, wo er an der Universität Newcastle-on-Tyne als Linguist mit den Schwerpunkten Gefängnisliteratur und mündliche afrikanische Literaturtradition unterrichtet.
