Auguste Forel

    Auguste-Henri Forel was a pioneering scientist whose work spanned myrmecology, neuroanatomy, and psychiatry. He made significant contributions to our understanding of the human brain and ant societies, notably as a co-founder of the neuron theory.     • Auguste Forel byl švýcarský myrmekolog (nauka o mravencích), neuroanatom a psychiatr (svého času byl asistentem Guddena, který ošetřoval internovaného bavorského krále Ludvíka a spolu s ním za zadaných okolností zemřel). Forel byl také zastáncem eugeniky a z dnešního pohledu jsou jeho úvahy kritizovány jako rasistické. Nicméně byl také horlivý aktivista (bojující např. s alkoholismem) a mimo jiné by se dalo říct feminista prosazující rovnost žen a mužů. Pohlavní (dnes bychom řekli genderová) otázka byla poprvé vydána v roce 1904. Poslední (šestnácté), vydání z roku 1931 (česky 1933) již za zdravotních důvodů nemohl sepsat sám a díl zpracoval (a vydatně přepracoval) Rainer Fetscher. Auguste Forel napsal předmluvu a v roce vydání knihy zemřel ve věku 82 let.
