V květnu 1941 pronikla německá bitevní loď Bismarck, tehdy nejmohutnější válečná loď na světě, v rámci operace Rheinübung do Atlantiku, a vážně tak ohrozila obchodní trasy, na nichž byla Británie životně závislá. Britská admiralita zorganizovala mohutnou akci, jejímž jediným cílem bylo její vypátrání, uštvání a potopení. Do pronásledování, jež se v osmi dnech odehrávalo na nesmírných oceánských prostorách, do nějž se zapojili i příslušníci jiných národností a při němž přišlo o život přes 4000 námořníků, bylo zapojeno několik desítek lodí… Krátce po půl jedenácté 27. května 1941 se nad planoucím vrakem bývalé pýchy německého válečného námořnictva zavřela neklidná hladina Atlantiku. Skončila tím i jedna z velkých událostí historie námořního válčení a zaujala místo vedle bitev u Salaminy, Lepanta, anglického loďstva s Armadou, u Trafalgaru, Cušimy, Jutska, Midwaye a v Korálovém moři. Ve čtvrtek 23. března 1944 odpoledne napadlo šestnáct partyzánů v okupovaném Římě ozbrojenou kolonu 156 policistů SS. Dějištěm napadení byla Via Rasella, úzká svažující se ulice v centru města. Partyzáni způsobili Němcům těžké ztráty a sami unikli nezraněni a nezpozorováni. Rozplynuli se v podzemí římského odboje.

Bitva o Guadalcanal znamenala ve válce o Tichomoří rozhodující přelom a zastavení dosud nezadržitelného postupu Japonců. Ti nasadili značné vojenské síly, aby získali zpět letiště na Guadalcanalu, která dobyla americká námořní pěchota v srpnu 1942. Po šesti měsících nepřetržitých urputných bojů včetně velkých námořních bitev se poražení Japonci stáhli a do okolních moří a vzdušného prostoru nad nimi jim byl uzavřen přístup. Autor se jako důstojník námořní pěchoty zúčastnil bojů na Guadalcanalu a přilehlých ostrovech od prvního dne a opřel své vylíčení o informace rozhodujících velitelů obou bojujících stran.

Rozhodující bitva II. svět. války V bitvě u Midwayských ostrovů počátkem června 1942 uštědřilo americké námořnictvo japonským silám zdrcující porážku; byl zde zastaven japonský příval, nastal skutečný zlom v celé válce v Tichomoří, třebaže vlastní konec války byl ještě v nedohlednu. Japonci při bitvě přišli o polovinu své úderné námořní síly: o nejmodernější a nejvýznamnější zbraň pro vedení války – letadlové lodi a námořní letectvo. Oba autoři jsou nad jiné povolaní k hodnocení této bitvy: jako špičkoví váleční piloti - Fučida navíc vedl první vlnu letounů útočících na Pearl Harbor - podrobili kritice a zkoumání každý krok velení japonského námořnictva. Pramen Gangy byl znám, avšak ještě dlouho si spolu s celým horním tokem řeky Bhágirathí zachovával pověst tajemného a nepřístupného místa, a to nejen díky své odlehlosti, nýbrž i proto, že Indové dlouho bránili cizincům v přístupu do této části své země. Nedostal se sem ani v Indii velmi populární Sir Edmund Hillary, když uspořádal v roce 1977 svou slavnou expedici „From the Ocean to the Sky“ („Od oceánu k oblakům“), během níž se pokusil vyjet na tryskových člunech od ústí Gangy do moře co nejvýše proti jejímu proudu. Kvůli své strategické poloze u hranic z Čínou byla tehdy ještě celá oblast stále součástí cizincům nepřístupných území, a tak musel slavný Novozélanďan u Dévaprajágu se svými čluny odbočit do Alaknandy a Gómukh navštívili jen dva indičtí členové jeho výpravy.

Die Welt von Wabi-Sabi Unter den Japanern gibt es eine weit verbreitete Geschichte über die frühen Jahre eines Teemeisters namens Sen No Rikyu. Als Sohn eines bescheidenen Lagerverwalters versuchte er, seinen Status zu verbessern, indem er den Weg des Tees beherrschte - eine alte japanische Tradition für die feierliche Zubereitung und das Servieren von Tee. Im Alter von 19 Jahren verließ er sein Zuhause in Osaka, um eine Audienz bei einem Meister (Takeno Joo) zu suchen. Der Meister stimmte zu, Rikyu als Schüler aufzunehmen, aber nur, wenn er seine Prüfung bestand, die seinen Garten "perfekt" machen sollte. Rikyu kümmerte sich um den Garten seines Meisters und harkte sorgfältig jede Stelle, bis kein einziges abgefallenes Blatt mehr auf dem Boden lag.
