David Ross Brower byl přední ekolog a zakladatel mnoha ekologických organizací. Jako mladík byl významným horolezcem. Založil Sierra Club Foundation, John Muir Institute for Environmental Studies, Friends of the Earth, League of Conservation Voters, Earth Island Institute, North Cascades Conservation Council a Fate of the Earth Conferences. V letech 1952 až 1969 působil jako první výkonný ředitel Sierra Clubu a třikrát zasedal v jeho správní radě.
