Proslul svými popisy mnoha mořských plžů pacifického severozápadu Ameriky a mnoho let byl přední americkou autoritou v oboru živých i fosilních měkkýšů. Jeho rozsáhlý vědecký přínos zahrnoval také ornitologii, zoologii obratlovců i bezobratlých, antropologii, oceánografii a paleontologii. Věnoval se rovněž meteorologickým pozorováním na Aljašce pro Smithsonian Institution.
