Další z řady románů chilské spisovatelky Isabel Allende vychází ze skutečných historických událostí z doby, kdy Španělé v 16. století dobývali území dnešního Chile a krutě se potýkali s odporem původních obyvatel, indiánů Mapuche. Spisovatelka líčí historická fakta na pozadí životního příběhu Inés Suárezové, silné a statečné ženy, rodačky ze španělské Extermadury, kterou do Jižní Ameriky zavedlo pátrání po jejím manželovi.
